Crafts and Vines ~ an extension of your living room

a group of people sitting at a table

By Laura Noyes, Owner of Riverside Food Tours, July 23, 2017

Crafts and Vines, is owned by Vic and Lesley Hugo who are on a mission to educate people and take the snobbery out of wine. This charming little wine and tap room is on the corner of Main and 7th Street in Mainstrasse Village, a historic German neighborhood located on the west side of Covington, KY.

The couple both has backgrounds in finance. Lesley left the corporate world to pursue her dream of owning a wine bar. They chose Covington because it’s in the midst of a renaissance with new life and vitality pouring in every day.

“It’s something we’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” Lesley Hugo said. She’s been interested in wine for about 10 years and recently worked part-time at the Vino Volo wine bar at the airport, and Vic is a home brewer. “Now’s the time! There’s just so much going on in Covington. You can feel the electricity in the air when you go down there.”
Crafts and Vines is a favorite stop on Riverside Food Tours’ Mainstrasse Village Food Tour every Saturday at 10:30am. Guests get to meet Vic and Lesley who help the guests choose one of the unique local beers or imported wines on tap for part of the tasting. The guests are then treated to an artfully designed charcuterie board that is not only beautiful to look at but chocked full of locally sourced items, such as bread by Sixteen Bricks, cheeses, sausages, Marcona almonds, dried apricots and cranberries, olives, caper berries, and Made by Mavis artisan jams.

As you walk into the space you are greeted by a beautiful copper topped bar fronted with wine crates. An adjacent room has a fireplace, soft seating and an array of games for relaxing and socializing. They also have a retail wall with a nice variety of beer, wines and accessories.
Their target audience is the “before and after” dinner crowd. Tantalizing desserts like Crème Brule, Pot de Crème or Bananas Foster bread pudding are created by Haley Mathews, their pastry chef.

What’s next for the Hugo’s? Plans are underway for a new patio seating area to accommodate another 12 to 15 people in back of the shop.
Hours are: Tuesday – Thursday 4-11pm, Friday 4-midnight, Saturday noon-midnight and Sunday 2-10pm. For more information: call (859) 360-0476 or visit their website at
